Manga Planet is happy to announce we will officially release the English version of ZEN SOYEN SHAKU Part 1 by Masatsugu Takashima this fall on our official website!
Soyen Shaku: The Cosmopolitan Monk who Brought Zen to the World
ZEN SOYEN SHAKU details the life story of Soyen Shaku, the first person to bring Zen to the United States of America. Born in 1860, Soyen Shaku became a Buddhist monk at a young age and studied at Keio University. He later learned English, studied abroad in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and was the Zen master at Engaku-ji, one of the most important Zen temples in Japan and designated National Treasure by the Japanese government. In 1893, Soyen Shaku attended the World’s Parliament of Religion held in Chicago and gained worldwide attention as a leading scholar and representative of Zen Buddhism. Following the parliament, he traveled across America giving lectures.
